Curriculum K-8

Language Arts

Agassiz believes in a Balanced Literacy approach to reading and writing. This approach combines the explicit instruction of phonics or skills based approach, with the immersion in quality literature advocated by the whole language approach. We look at each child as an individual, and tailor instruction to each student’s talents and Agassiz student presenting results for a projectneeds.  To achieve this balanced literacy, we use a blend of materials, including the Houghton Mifflin (K-6) and Prentice-Hall (7-8) reading series, authentic picture and chapter books, poetry and Great Books. We emphasize research-based strategies throughout the grades, and stress critical thinking skills through higher order questioning.

Mathematics

We use an inquiry based, problem solving, and real-world approach to mathematics. Trailblazers, a complete, research-based, National Science Foundation-funded K-5 mathematics program integrating math, science, and language arts. This standards-based program is based on the belief that children learn best when engaged in problem-solving exercises that utilize real-world contexts. In 6-8 we use Connected Math, also funded by the National Science Foundation. Connected Math helps students and teachers develop understanding of important mathematical concepts, skills, procedures, and ways of thinking and reasoning, in number, geometry, measurement, algebra, probability and statistics.

Science

Our inquiry-based, hands-on science program includes the use of FOSS (Full Option Science System) kits.  FOSS is a research-based science Agassiz students obeserve during a experimentcurriculum for grades K–8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley. The FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms and to prepare them for life in the 21st century. We supplement these kits with teacher created, real-world explorations. At Agassiz, we are committed to developing an environmental awareness in our students, and are involved in classroom projects to cultivate that awareness.

Social Studies

At Agassiz, we use an integrated, project-based approach to the teaching of the Social Sciences. We explore history, cultures, economics and civics through textbooks, online research, the arts, and literature.  We emphasize this integrated approach to allow access to knowledge for different learning styles. The breadth and scope of the social sciences is impossible to teach in the nine short years that students are with us. By equipping them with the skills they need to access and comprehend new learning, we give our students to tools to be life-long learners.

Technology

At Agassiz, we integrate technology throughout the curriculum through mobile laptop labs, Smartboard interactive whiteboard technology, and computers in every classroom.  We weave these tools throughout the school day and through all subjects. We use digital camera and visual technologies to expand the knowledge our students have of technology tools to the arts.

The Arts

As an Arts Magnet Cluster school, Agassiz puts high value on the fine, technological and performing arts. We integrate them throughout the Student and Teacher Working on Art Projectcurriculum, and teachers have ongoing professional development to ensure their expertise in enhancing teaching and learning through the arts.  In addition we have a full-time dance/drama teacher and music teacher. Other artists, including visual artists, are brought into the school as a part of CAPE (Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education) grants and other arts partnerships. Please look at our partners page for a full listing of these partnerships.

Language

Agassiz teaches Arabic to all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  We are excited to offer this essential language as well the rich heritage of the Arabic cultures.
